Four Social Media Trends Small-to-Medium-Sized Businesses Should Know

I’m not only an Account Supervisor at TRG Marketing but also a part-time MBA student. My work has made my MBA studies come to life.

By the same token, my MBA has surfaced interesting concepts, articles, and cases that are directly applicable to my work. One example was this Coursera article on “12 Major Social Media Trends in 2026”. 12 Major Social Media Trends in 2026 | Coursera.

For marketers, it’s filled with good perspective. For busy business leaders, I thought I would highlight a few that directly apply to the small- to medium-sized businesses we serve at TRG Marketing.

1. AI content creation is everywhere—use it wisely

AI writing and creative tools now help teams produce content faster. But AI-generated content tends to sound the same. When everyone is prompting the same tools the same way, a company’s voice becomes watered down. Consumers are also increasingly wary of content that reads as obviously AI-generated.

The fix is to use it deliberately. Let AI help with research, first drafts, and efficiency, but keep your brand voice, your audience’s specific needs, and your point of view at the center.

2. Consumers are tired of being sold to—lead with value

Audiences are increasingly fatigued by direct, sales-first marketing. What they respond to instead is content that educates, entertains, or solves a real problem.

Two things go hand-in-hand with this shift. First, authenticity and polish both have their place. A candid shot from an employee picnic can build trust the same way a well-designed graphic can. Real employees, customers, and behind-the-scenes moments still tend to build more trust than content that feels overly produced. Second, personalization is important. Customers notice when a brand responds quickly, remembers context, and treats their questions like they matter.

3. Social platforms are becoming search engines

Users are increasingly using social platforms the way they’d use a search engine: looking for recommendations, reviews, tutorials, and answers. This has been dubbed “social as search,” and it’s a trend that primarily applies to consumer-facing businesses.

That changes how content should be built—being findable when someone searches a relevant term or hashtag on the platform itself. That means paying attention to captions, on-screen text, keywords, and the specific discovery features each platform offers, and building content that answers the questions your customers enter.

4. As AI “word slop” increases, bold creative stands out

AI has made it easy to churn out text, but easy to churn out also means easy to ignore. When everyone’s copy sounds the same, words alone stop grabbing attention.

What still cuts through? Bold creative choices — and this is really a testament to the power of visuals. A striking image, a distinctive format, or an idea that feels unmistakably like you can grab attention in a way that text alone often can’t. This doesn’t mean every post needs to be a home run, though.

The bottom line for small to medium-size businesses

You don’t need to chase every trend. You need a social presence that’s professional, consistent, and authentic. You also need to understand where social media stands in your marketing priority list.
